Welcome

It has been busy month for all of us in DISC as we prepared for iFestival 2009. Our update is mostly about the launch. We'll be uploading many of the projects we received to our website over the coming months.

iFestival 2009

On Wednesday 3rd June Mr. Eamon Ryan T.D. Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, launched the iFestival 2009 exhibition in the Central Library, Ilac Centre, Dublin. We were joined at the launch by guests Nuala Carey from RTE, Professor Brian Norton from DIT and children from the Ballymun Music Programme.

iFestival 2009 has given schools involved in the DISC programme a unique opportunity to exhibit work being done by teachers and pupils in the area of ICT over the last year. It demonstrates and celebrates the great variety of ICT projects being undertaken in schools and the skills, creativity and imagination of the pupils involved.  The exhibition contains comics, 3D designs, digital pictures, photo journals, LEGO robotics and multimedia projects from 20 participating schools. We hope you'll get a chance to see the exhibition sometime over the next three weeks.

RTE News covered the launch of iFestival on their Six One News. The two minute video gives a great overview of the exhibition.

All the schools that participated received certificates from Nuala Carey. St. Paul's CBS Primary, St. Gabriel's NS and St. Audoen's NS all won ICT equipment from SMART Technologies and Go Interactive. St. Paul's CBS Primary also made the most significant contribution to iFestival 2009 and therefore the Principal, Domhnall O?Suibhne and ICT Coordinator, Johnny McCawwon won a trip to BETT next year. St. Enda's Primary School won the second prize of a trip to BETT for Mary Marren and Anne Smith.

We will be announcing winners of the comic, photo journal, digital picture and podcast competitions over the next couple of weeks. Certificates for all participating children will be delivered to schools as soon as possible.

iFestival has been made possible thanks to our partners SMART Technologies, NCTE, HP, DICP and DIT. We are also very grateful to our sponsors,  Civil Service Charities Fund, ESB, Arup Consulting Engineers, Go Interactive and Coca Cola. Thanks also to the staff in the Central Library and particularly Geraldine O'Brien for looking after us. Finally thanks to the teachers and assistants who brought children to the launch.

We are already looking forward to next year and we would be delighted to get your views on how to make iFestival 2010 a relevant and enjoyable event for teachers and pupils.
